Dear [member_name_first],
May 8, 2007 is National Teacher Appreciation Day to
honor the important role teachers have in educating
our children and shaping our community. The first
National Teacher's Day was established in 1953 at
the urging of none other than first lady, Eleanor
Roosevelt. If you are a superintendent or principle
and want to show appreciation to your teachers, visit
the National Parent Teacher Association
website for some inspiring ideas. For
those of you who are teachers, we hope you find yourself
surrounded by appreciation and celebration--we know
you deserve it! Another important holiday, Mother's
Day, is celebrated May 13th. Help your students show
appreciation to their mothers or other important
caregivers in their lives by writing letters, making
cards or other craft projects to honor them. Learn
about the history of Mother's Day and share it with
your students by visiting the Mother's Day Central website.
We
also wish to express our heartfelt condolences to
the Virginia Tech community in the wake of the tragic
violence that took 32 lives just last month.
Helping
Children Cope with Anger
Dr. Leah Davies,
M.Ed.
All
human beings experience anger. But children, in particular,
have difficulty channeling their strong emotions
into acceptable outlets. Anger is a response to a
real or perceived loss or stress. It results when
a person's self-esteem, body, property, values or
sense of entitlement are threatened. It is often
a reaction to feeling misunderstood, frustrated,
hurt, rejected or ashamed.
Children
often blame other people or events for their anger
instead of assuming responsibility for it. If children
do not learn how to release their anger appropriately,
it can fester and explode in inappropriate ways or
be internalized and damage their sense of self-worth.
When children express their anger inappropriately,
it may mean that they lack coping skills to deal
with their emotions in positive ways.
