Individualized Education Program

Students with ADHD who qualify for services under a special education (IDEA) category (e.g., learning disability, behavior disorder, health impaired) need to be provided with an individualized education program (IEP). This written plan translates into a specially designed program to meet the unique needs of the child.

A student accommodation plan often includes:

The IEP typically includes the following information (as noted by Heward et al., 2022):

  1. A statement of a child’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance.
  2. A statement of measurable annual goals (academic and functional).
  3. A description of how the child’s progress toward meeting the annual goals will be measured and when periodic reports toward meeting the annual goals will be provided.
  4. A statement of the services provided (based on peer-reviewed research) and what modifications and supports will be provided.
  5. A description of why the child may not participate with activities afforded to his or her general education peers.
  6. A statement of appropriate accommodations for state and district assessments or alternative assessments if deemed appropriate.
  7. A projected start date for services and the frequency, duration, and location of those services.
  8. A description of measurable postsecondary goals.
  9. A description of services needed to assist students in meeting these goals.
  10. A statement that the student has been informed of his or her rights (beginning not later than the first IEP that is in effect when the student is 16 and updated on a yearly basis).
