Now we will consider the most common recording tools in terms of their respective advantages, disadvantages, uses, tips, and examples. These are:
HOW to Assess? Observing & Recording Methods
There are many specific tools to observe and record the behaviors of young children. These instruments can help you gather specific information systematically about a child or program. Each approach gathers data differently-- by writing, ranking, rating, tallying or counting.
There are many “windows”, or multiple observations measures, that can provide differing perspectives for assessment. (Bailey & Simeonsson, 1988.) These windows are like those in a house—each offering another view – just as every observation and recording method gives a unique picture of the child. When a variety of assessment tools are combined, the most complete and useful portrait of the whole child emerges.
*All of these can also be done on a phone, tablet, or laptop.
