Reasons Why We Should Use
Unison Oral Responding in the Classroom

First, unison oral responding is instructionally efficient, in that teachers can provide more instruction to students in less time (again, as compared to posing the same question to each student or several students in the classroom).

Second, unison oral responding is a fluency building mechanism, in that students can move beyond skill acquisition to proficiency faster because of the multiple opportunities to practice and receive feedback from the teacher.

Third, this type of responding promotes student safety. Students feel safe when they are able to respond with others rather than be singled out in front of their peers.

Fourth, using unison oral responding is an effective behavior management strategy because students do not have time to go "off task." Almost every teacher-delivered question is posed to the group; thus, students do not have opportunities to "disengage" because other students are responding to specific questions directed specifically to them rather than to everyone.

Fifth, unison oral responding is a social and community building strategy. Students must work together to produce a unison response.
