Tutoring Models

Traditional tutoring. In traditional tutoring, higher achieving individuals are paired with students who are lower achieving. Traditional tutoring has been shown to be effective across grades. It rests on the fact that the tutors are already skilled in reading and, with training, can impart important reading skills to struggling students.

Cross-age tutoring. In cross-age tutoring, tutors are students approximately 2 or more years older or younger than those receiving tutoring. Benefits are plentiful for those receiving tutoring, particularly when older students work with younger students.

Classwide tutoring. In the classwide peer tutoring (CWPT) approach, the entire class is organized into two teams where students tutor one another. Tutor and tutee roles are highly structured for increased opportunities to respond and to receive feedback. Tutoring occurs simultaneously for all tutor-tutee pairs. The teacher monitors the activities and awards points for teams who answer questions posed by their tutors. A winning team is determined daily and weekly.
