Vocabulary Journal
Another tool for you is to have students develop their own vocabulary journals. These journals have entries that you will look at, but not grade. As a teacher, you will give positive comments and suggestions. The Vocabulary Journal entries look like this:
Vocabulary word: _________________________________
In my own words: ______________________________________________________
Drawing of the word:
New Info:
I would suggest that these become cards that you give students so they can keep them alphabetized. This will help them learn and will help them add new information as they keep learning. Remember, a vocabulary-rich environment will expose middle school and high school students to a minimum of 500,000 words a year and, optimally, to a million words a year.
