First/Second/Third Person
- Read a text to the students that is written in third person. Have students underline the words that make this third person voice.
- Discuss those words and why those particular words made the text third person.
- Have the students change those words to make the text second person voice.
- Have students share their changes with the class and have a discussion on how that changed the text. For example, does the text make them pay more attention now?
- Then have the students change the text to first person voice and repeat sharing the text.
- In the end, have a discussion on which voice the students preferred, which was more personal, and when they think each type of voice should be used.
