Conventions

  1. Cali and Bowen (2016) give some guidelines for conventions based on grade level. You can find their work at Learn NC, look for The Five Features of Effective Writing. They talk about the conventions of writing such as mechanics, usage, and sentence formation and give grade level information for teachers.
  2. Texas Gateway includes PowerPoints to guide you in teaching conventions within the context of teaching writing. You can find these PowerPoints by googling Texas Gateway Teaching Written Conventions in Context. These are great PowerPoints to use in teaching, share with parents, and share with colleagues.
  3. Purdue Online Writing Lab is an excellent resource to use before assessing or teaching conventions of writing.  You can find this by googling Purdue Online Writing Lab. This site is as easy or complicated as you want. It includes basic writing for teaching younger grades through more advanced writing in graduate degrees.
