First/Second/Third Person

  1. Read a text to the students that is written in third person. Have students underline the words that make this third person voice.
  2. Discuss those words and why those particular words made the text third person.
  3. Have the students change those words to make the text second person voice.
  4. Have students share their changes with the class and have a discussion on how that changed the text. For example, does the text make them pay more attention now?
  5. Then have the students change the text to first person voice and repeat sharing the text.
  6. In the end, have a discussion on which voice the students preferred, which was more personal, and when they think each type of voice should be used.
