Steps: After Leaving a Relationship

Once the victim has left the relationship, she or he should follow these steps:

  1. Change the locks if she is still in the home and the abuser has left.
  2. Install as many security features in the home as possible.  Secure dead-bolt locks.  Installing good outside lighting, metal doors, gates, a security system, or even a barking dog will increase the chance of safety.
  3. Inform the neighbors that the former partner is no longer welcome on the premises.  Ask them to call the police if they see him or anyone loitering or watching the home.
  4. Make sure everyone who cares for the children know who is and is NOT allowed to pick them up. Do not allow the children to walk home from school or in the neighborhood unaccompanied.
  5. Have the victim obtain a restraining order both for themselves and the children.  Have them keep a copy of it with them at all times and give a copy to the children’s school, babysitter, and trusted friend or relative.  Make sure neighbors have a copy to show to the police.
  6. Let co-workers know about the situation if the former partner is likely to harass the victim at the workplace.  Ask them to warn the victim if the abuser is seen on the premises.
  7. Help the victim get herself and her children into counseling, attend workshops, or get into support groups.  Do whatever is necessary to form a supportive network that will be there if it is needed and will increase the victim’s sense of security and protection.
