Effects of Media Violence on Children
- Children will increase their anti-social behavior
- They will become less sensitive to violence and those who suffer from violence.
- They may view the world as violent and mean and fear becoming a victim of violence.
- They will desire to see more violence in real life as well as in the media.
- They will view violence as a way to solve real-life conflicts.
Numerous research studies cite the potential adverse effects as including increased violent behavior, impaired school performance, decreased attention span and concentration span, decreased family communication, desensitization to violence, and excessive consumer focus. In addition, too much sedentary television viewing causes health concerns such as increased obesity in children, decreased physical activity and fitness, increased cholesterol and sodium intakes, repetitive strain injury in video games, insomnia, increased sexual activity, and increased use of tobacco and alcohol at a younger age.
