Environmental Variable
At Home the Student:
- Does not want to leave home
- Deliberately tries to avoid going to school or doing school-related tasks (like homework)
- Suffers from headaches or stomachaches, especially on school days
- Dislikes school or complains about school
- Complains about the teacher
- Increased need to rest or sleep
- Displays regressed behaviors such as bed-wetting, thumb-sucking, whining
At School the Student:
- Shows little interest in academics
- Constantly asks if it’s time to go home
- Worries that parents will forget to pick him up or won’t be home for them
- Is not able to perform motor tasks at the appropriate developmental level
- Is unable to perform academic tasks at the appropriate grade level--is failing
- Has difficulty following the daily routine
- Talks incessantly or withdraws and does not interact with others
- Complains that school is too hard or too boring or too easy, even though he/she cannot do the work
- Has difficulty with transitions
- Seems overly restless
- Has a high rate of absenteeism
- Plays mostly with younger children when given a choice
- Wants to play during work time
- Chooses recess, PE, music, etc. as their favorite subject
- Feels overwhelmed by the size and enormity of the lunchroom or playground
- Engages in avoidance behaviors (goes to the school nurse, bathroom, office)
- Has difficulty understanding the teacher’s directions
- Reverses, omits, or substitutes letters or numbers when writing or reading
- Marks papers with random, incorrect answers
In General, How Often Does This Child:
- Seem withdrawn, shy, depressed, or easily fatigued
- Revert to infantile behaviors such as soiling or thumb-sucking
- Compare self negatively to others and complain he/she has no friends
- Cry easily or frequently; be difficult or impossible to console
- Make up stories, adjust the truth, or lie
- Show physical symptoms of stress such as nail-biting or picking at sores
- Need constant reassurance and praise
- Make restless, self-soothing body movements such as rocking
- Feel harried or hurried
- Dawdle or put off chores or schoolwork
