Station 2 Considerations
The kinds of considerations included in Why DI? reflect what most teachers ponder in Station 2. They are provided again here. DI:
- Emphasizes beginning with the end in mind.
- Addresses the impacts of de-personalization.
- Aims at access for all.
- Helps teachers avoid the “activity trap.”
- Reflects a lifelong learning approach.
- Eliminates a counter-productive hierarchy within the teaching ranks.
- Addresses what teachers find most challenging.
- Operationally defines teacher expertise.
- Promotes professional development at all levels.
- Promotes ownership over blame.
- Looks to motivate students through effective assessment.
- Promotes a high view of student locus of control.
- Acknowledges that both teachers and students need support.
- Helps teachers determine what’s worth fighting for.
- Avoids creating more “black boxes.”
- Helps teachers make instructionally “fair pitches” to students.
- Connects the quality of learning to teacher beliefs.
This list of factors is not exhaustive, but representative, and could be expanded if we were to survey a large sampling of teachers.
